2020 was always going to be a rough year, the onset of COVID took its time to reach Canberra, but reach here it did. The pressure was on for the “strive for five” dream of a legendary five consecutive Grand Final wins which would have seen retiring legendary coach Rourke exit in fanfare.
Despite a rocky start and uncertainty over whether the season would survive the delays put upon by lockdowns and the pandemic, Ainslie pushed forward through the season. Reaching round 5 with 4 losses was a wake up call to the First Grade men’s team, the turn around was impressive as they managed to play through the rest of the regular season without a loss. Placing 4th on the ladder at the end of the regular season, Ainslie had just barely made the cut to finals.
The Semi-Finals game would see Ainslie go up against their previous years rivals of Belconnen. The game was an uphill battle with multiple key players out on injury. This would not be enough to deter Ainslie, as they gave this game everything they had. The first quarter was a strong start, with Ainslie taking the early lead as usual at 3 goals to 1. The second quarter would a total of 12 goals scored between the two teams, unfortunately this would give Belconnen the 2 goal lead at 9-7. As usual Belconnen tends to perform better towards the end of their games, going into the third quarter they would extend their lead slightly further with a score of 13-8. Ainslie was undeterred and played their hearts out in the final quarter, however this would not be enough to curtail Belconnen’s favourite quarter. Ending the game with an impressive 21-9 lead, This is where Ainslie would bow out, unable to claim their fifth grand final in a row.

Making it all the way to Grand Finals the Second Grade Men’s team had also suffered annoyances in the form of a pandemic throwing a wrench into the works of their training. The team perservered through the season despite the challenges, and performed exceptionally well. Reaching the Grand Finals, it was once again Belconnen that stood in the way of the coveted premisership. First Quarter was a nailbiter as the teams pushed back and forth for an early lead, with a score of 2-1 in Belconnens favour, they had found the lead but they would have to fight hard to retain it. Second Quarter continued the trend, both teams refused to give an inch as neither was able to make easy scores.
