Alan Smith is the third of the three Smith brothers of Ainslie. Like Charles and Martin, Alan was able to play over 200 first grade games reaching 208 between 1973 and 1985. Alan began playing before this at Ainslie with the Atoms team since 1961. Once established in the First Grade team he was referred to as a “tough uncompromising defender” playing the fullback position and being a key defence to compliment his brothers who each took to the forwards and centre positions.
Alan had a love for competition and would not be one to apply for board positions, and while his time spent training was often critiqued by his coaches his results on game day spoke for themselves as he faced down serious competition playing not just in the AFL Canberra league but also as an ACT representative going up against Brownlow medallist Malcom Blight in 1980.
Alan became an AFL Canberra hall of famer in 1985.
