Before playing for Ainslie, Jim was an RAF Aircraftman in the Second World War, enlisting in May 1944 and discharged in September 1945. Ater the war, he would join Ainslie in 1946 and was early noted as one of the tallest amongst the team, whereby he was often put into the ruck. John had immediate success and was revered as a very reliable and capable player – in his first year he would win his first premiership with Ainslie and off the back of his performances was selected for the Canberra Representative team. In 1954, Jim retired from football in 1954 with 132 First Grade Games under his belt in eight seasons and was consistently selected for ACT sides during his career.
