Karl’s story begins before his time at Ainslie, in 1965 he started what would be a legendary run as a goal umpire for AFL in the ACT. Known for being a colourful character on the job he was enthusiastic in his duties and enjoyed adding a bit of dramatic flair to games. He would go on to reach a milestone in 1980 that would not be beat for over a decade, an impressive 327 First Grade games Umpired, this included 11 grand finals. This record doesn’t even count his remaining umpire work for the reserve grades leaving him with just over 500 senior games as a goal umpire.
Following on from his retirement as an ACT goal umpire he would head over to Ainslie in 1982, there he would work as the Club treasurer and offered his teachings as a specialist umpire advisor. Remaining Treasurer until 1989. Stepping down in 1990 to join the club’s committee. Alongside his life membership with Ainslie he is also an ACT Australian Football Umpire’s Association life member as of 1974.
