Martin “Marty” Smith is the 2nd of the legendary Smith brother trio. Starting at Ainslie as a junior he showed quick improvement to make a name for himself joining the senior team in 1970, playing until 1986. In that time Martin played 211 First grade games and 35 second grade games. In 1976 he scored 85 goals to set the years record at Ainslie.
This was not his only accomplishment for goal kicking, Martin currently sits in the top 3 First Grade goal kickers of all time at Ainslie with a total of 350 First Grade goals. Beating out Gerard Zochling by 2 goals, but falling shy of Kevin “Cowboy” Neal’s 482 goals.
The Smith trio unfortunately couldn’t manage the hat trick of games played milestones in the same year. in 1978 Charles reach 200 games, Alan Reached 100. Martin suffered a back injury during the season and missed 6 games, he earned his 150 games played in round 4 of 1979.
Martin would continue to hold various positions at the club in the years that follow but is best remembered by his passion for the game and the milestones he reached.
