Mr Sutton was an instrumental part of Ainslie Football Club.

Alf Sutton initially arrived in Canberra in 1920 as a carpenter before he would become one of Ainslie’s foundation players in 1927. Alf would go on to play 111 games for the club before finishing his career in 1936.

Playing for the team for years, Mr Sutton had an undeniable love of the game; helping to found Ainslie Football Club he stayed on with the club for as long as he was able. serving as a club official until as late as 1939.

One Saturday morning while watching the Ainslie juniors, Alf decided to start coaching boys on the sidelines who were too young to particpate in the junior competition. Alf would become an inspiring figure in the eventual formation of the sub-juniors grade in Canberra (aged 8-12), alongside Herb Jenkins of Eastlake football club, the pair became the key drivers of the creation of the sub-junior competition – helping to foster the interest of many young Aussie kids in the sport of AFL.

To thank him for his service, the club would host a variety of charity events in 1942 to raise money for Mr Sutton who had suffered a serious injury around that time.
